Art work in the sun

The Reception children enjoyed the beautiful weather on Friday and went for a walk through the woods. We found a lovely spot to sit and used our senses to observe and explore the surroundings. The children then drew a picture of their favourite flower, insect or tree that they had looked at. Reception were very creative and came up with some amazing art work of the world around us . We even laid down and had a quiet moment where we watched the clouds and talked about the different shapes they made.

Great art work Reception

Minibeast Hunt

This week 3YON have been on minibeast hunt. Each child took a magnifying glass and went to discover what minibeasts they could find around the school grounds. The children found some webs on the cherry trees and noticed that it was caterpillars that had made them. They also found lots of lady birds, bees, ants, beetles and snails. One child commented, “I found a buzzing bee on the flowers.” The children had lots of fun on their hunt and have been sharing what they have found with their teachers and friends.

What minibeasts can you find at home?

Spring Walk

The children at Nursery have been enjoying the sunshine and going on a Spring walk around the school. We used our senses to listen to the birds, smell the flowers and look for wild life in the pond. ” They smell lovely.” One child said.

The children talked about the flowers and discussed the different colours, sizes and shapes. “I like the orange one.” A child observed. We talked about the names of the flowers and the leaves growing on the trees. The children also visited the pond and we found some water snails. We’ll done nursery

Hopefully next time we will find some frog spawn.

Collecting Sticks

3YON are learning about the story of The Three Little pigs. The children went to the woods to collect some sticks which the second little pig used to build his house. They talked about the different sizes and how the sticks had got on the floor from the trees. One child suggested, “it was the wind” and another child said, “maybe the birds.”

When the children had collected all the sticks, they brought them back to the class room to make their own collages of houses made of sticks.

The Little Red Hen

We have been reading the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’ in 3YO Nursery and using actions to re-tell the story. The children were very excited when we went for a walk to the orchard to find the wheat that the hen had planted. As we walked we told the story using the actions we had learnt. When the children saw the wheat they were amazed at how tall it was. “It’s bigger than me.” One child said. The children loved measuring themselves against the wheat and exploring the different textures. We then helped the Little Red Hen cut the wheat like in the story before taking the wheat back to the class room to ‘grind the corn’ .

Well done 3YON.

Puddle Jumping

We have had lots of wet weather last month in May but this did not stop 3YON having lots of fun in the rain. We put on our puddle suits and wellies and went outside . We walked through the woods and listened to the sound of the rain and talked about what we could see and hear. We then saw a large puddle and the children were so excited they jumped straight in. They splashed and sploshed, twirled and walked through the puddle. We had so much fun and laughter.

Tadpoles!!!

The children in 3YON went on a little adventure to see what we could find at the pond. When we arrived the children were very quiet and waited patiently. They saw some flies floating on the water and one child talked about how they could see the clouds and their own reflection. After waiting for a short time we saw some tadpoles. The children were very excited and they kept popping up in the water. We talked about frogspawn and what the tadpoles will turn in too.

We can not wait to come back and see how the tadpoles have changed.

Bird feeders

2YON have been having lots of fun making some bird feeders. They put some lard and bird seeds into a jug and mixed them to form a mixture. Next they took a small handful and moulded it into balls to create fat balls. They then took the remaining mixture and made moulds which they added string as a handle. When they were ready, they hung the bird feeders on the trees in the garden and the fat balls were put into a bird feeder. The children were really happy with what they made and I bet the birds can not wait to try the tasty bird feeders.

Well done 2YON the birds are very lucky.

Bird watching with 2YON

2YON have been very busy taking part in different activities around birds. They went on a bird watching walk where they had to find the birds on their piece of paper and tick them off when they found them. They used their senses to listen and hear the birds.

One of our local grandparents from the school has a 12year old male Harris Hawk called Oli and when he heard the children, he showed him the bird by letting the bird fly around. The children loved this experience.

They also made some birds out of paper plates and paints.

Fantastic 2YON

3YON ice art

3YON have been very busy making some lovely ice art. They selected different shaped moulds, which included a train and butterfly, and went around the garden to find some items to put in the moulds. We found different sized leaves, sticks and some herbs. Nursery then put them in the moulds and using recycled rain water from the tray, we filled them up. Then we added some blue ribbon and left them to freeze over night. The next day the children were so excited when they found that they were frozen. We took them out of the moulds and hung them on the tree.

Throughout the process we talked about freezing and melting.

Well done.
